Aluminum is valued in various industries for its unique properties. In this article, we explore why aluminum stands out in fashion, focusing on its lightweight nature and corrosion resistance.
Lightweight
Why is aluminum lighter than other alloy materials? Primarily due to its density. Consider zinc alloy compared to aluminum alloy: zinc has a density of 5g/cm³, while aluminum’s is 2.7g/cm³, making zinc about 1.8 times heavier than aluminum.
We tested to show the weight difference using similar buckles made from different materials. Though we lacked identical buckles, we calculated the weight difference with the ones available. The black buckle, made of zinc alloy, measures 0.29 x 0.43 x 0.052 cm, equating to a volume of roughly 0.0065 cm³, and weighs about 23g. In contrast, the silver buckle, crafted from aluminum alloy, measures 0.29 x 0.43 x 0.066 cm, with a volume of approximately 0.0082 cm³, and weighs around 16g.
To determine the weight per cubic centimeter for each material:
- Black zinc alloy buckle: 23g / 0.0065 cm³ = 3.54 g/cm³
- Silver aluminum buckle: 16g / 0.0082 cm³ = 1.95 g/cm³
By comparing these results, we confirm that aluminum is indeed 1.8 times lighter than zinc alloy. Feel free to conduct your own calculations with other metals and comment down your findings with us.
Thanks to its lightweight nature, aluminum is ideal for performance apparel, technological collections, functional gear, outdoor backpacks, and leisure collections.
Corrosion Resistance
The salt spray (or salt fog) test is a common method to assess the corrosion resistance of materials under elevated temperature conditions. Most global brands use the ASTM B117 standard, which involves a 1% salt solution for 24 hours. For our test, we used a 5% salt solution to enhance corrosion resistance and tested over several days.
After one week, we examined the buckle’s surface and observed no corrosion or color change, demonstrating its superior corrosion resistance.
